If you’d told baby Nick in 1986 that his shirt business would be going strong 40 years later, he would have been properly chuffed. It takes time to do things properly and Rome wasn’t built in a day.

I was at university studying geography and was supposed to be learning about rocks and population change, but instead was dreaming about the perfect shirt.

Collars were bigger back then, and patterns more garish, but I was always happiest in a smart shirt. A rarity for your average ‘80s geography student. I would wander down Jermyn Street making a nuisance of myself. A well-made shirt was a thing of beauty. I would marvel at the softness of the fabric and the quality of stitching. I couldn’t afford
them, but at least I could touch and feel them.

Then it hit me. If I wanted to wear great shirts, I would have to make them myself. So, I started Charles Tyrwhitt. And now we are all having a “Whoop Whoop” moment. 40 years is a long time – probably longer than it took the Romans to build Rome!
